In Eudora Welty’s A Worn Path† and Sherwood Anderson’s â€Å"Hands,† both authors present main characters that are isolated in their respective societies. In Welty’s work, Phoenix Jackson is an outsider because she removed herself form the normal life of society by living in the wildlife. Similarly, in Anderson’s work, Wing Biddlebaum, after being accused, choose to remove him from the society and avoided interaction with other people. Therefore, both characters are outsiders in their communities by choosing to live in isolation, away from other people. First of all, there are many different types of outsiders in society based on various reasons. According to dictionary.com, an outsider is â€Å"a person not belonging to a particular group, set,†¦show more content†¦In the start of the story author mentions that â€Å"Old Phoenix said, Out of my way, all you foxes, owls, beetles, jack rabbits, coons and wild animals!. . . Keep out from under these feet, little bob-whites.... Keep the big wild hogs out of my path† (Welty 1). This thing shows that Phoenix was living far away from human development. She was living in wild with no human around her and this makes her an outsider. Furthermore, the author further explains the idea by saying, â€Å"As Phoenix journeys through the forest to Natchez, her path takes her from a nonhuman natural world into a space impacted by human issues of race, gender, and class† (Claxton 74). It further puts light on the same idea that she was living in forest, in nonhuman natural wor ld, and she was not affected by the issues like race, gender, and class, which people at that time were facing. Therefore, she is an outsider. The similarity between the two characters which makes them an outsider is that the both have only one person who is close to them. Anderson writes at one place, â€Å"Among all the people of Winesburg but one had come close to him† (1). In the whole town there was only one person â€Å"George Willard†, who had any kind of relation with Wing. Antigone: The Influence of Free Will and Destiny Throughout Antigone, fate is responsible for many of the most devastating and critical events. The characters Antigone, Creon, Ismene, Haemon, and Tirasias experience many occasions that change their destiny, some events of which were predestined. It is frequently shown that fate and free will are intertwined. Each individual has a destiny, but it can be changed if they use their free will. Sophocle’s message is portrayed throughout the story through the actions of different characters. The individuals predestined fate and willingness to change it creates the series of events. She also shows her family focus when she shows Creon the damage that he would do to his family with his actions. Ismene speaks of how Creon would be robbing his son of a wife an d destroying his family (Sophocles, 90). Even during a time of chaos and sadness (after losing her brothers and the arrest of Antigone) Ismene stays with the values she believes in which is respected by many individuals. Each individual in Antigone had a predetermined fate although by the portrayal of his or her free will that fate may be changed. Creon, by displaying appalling acts such as enslaving Antigone despite warnings, showed he had the most free will. Tirasias, as the spokesmen of the gods, warns Creon about the consequences of his actions (Sophocles, 112). By ignoring Tirasias’s cautions, Creon portrays his free will. Creon is confident that through his determination he will be able to rule Thebes and create his own laws. Through these laws, Creon punishes Antigone, after she disobeys his rulings and buries her brother. Antigone reveals her free will by choosing death as her fate and life for her sister Ismene. When Ismene proclaims she will die with Antigone, Antig one refutes it. Antigone says that they should not both die, especially for an act that only she committed and Ismene had no part in (Sophocles, 88). Ive always been told you wont be called home until its your time; I guess heaven was needing a soldier somebody just like Valerie, brave enough to stand up for what you believe in and follow it through, and when I try to make it make sense in my mind the only conclusion I come to is heaven was needing a soldier. I’ve tried to be the influence on her life but, now it seems that she’s my influence. It was supposed to be us against the world; I was supposed to be the one that took her away from all the chaos in her life, the one that changed her, the one that made her realize there’s more to life than all the negativity going on at the moment, that there actually are things you can be genuinely happy about. And because I wasn’t able to make that happen, I feel it’s my responsibility to make every moment count, good or bad, and turn it into a learning experience. When I recall the day of October 17th, I feel the hearts of my family lighting a fire in me, making me strong; strong enough to take this bitter-sweet tragedy and use these emotions to try to make a difference in other lives because, no matter how irrefutably insane I may be in my own mind, it’s not too late, it’s never too late.
